Postpartum Doula Support

“Our choice is between controlling and teaching, between creating an atmosphere of distrust and one of trust, between setting an example of power and helping children to learn responsibility, between quick-fix parenting and the kind that’s focused on long-term goals.”

Alfie Kohn

Commonly asked questions:

What does a daytime postpartum session look like?

Every day is a bit different. When I walk through the door, I am always entering with the intention of meeting the immediate needs first. Sometimes that means preparing a quick meal that’s intended to support postpartum recovery and then holding the baby so you can eat while you share your current concerns. Other times it’s immediately supporting during a nursing session and doing a lactation assessment to help work through any breastfeeding concerns that have arisen. Sometimes it’s a lot of teaching, we go over the first bath, how to safely baby wear, learning how to swaddle and all the new things! Every session looks different because the postpartum invokes so much change and we are always in a state of learning this new baby.

What does an overnight postpartum session look like?

The first week of postpartum overnight sessions are devoted to respite care. I encourage clients to recover from birth, and focus efforts on finding equilibrium with a new baby in tow. The second week we begin to focus on setting the stage for healthy sleep habits, and understanding ritual and rhythm. Babies are developmentally meant to wake with frequency, and I support responsive tending while supporting all feeding efforts (whether you opt to nurse or exclusively pump or formula feed), and I try to help clients mimic my night flow to be able to replicate the same ease on the nights they do not have support. Overnight caregiving can be very jarring to the system, many times bandwidth is shorter at night for many parents and for this reason I encourage clients who are able to add-on daytime sessions for more in-depth newborn education.

Are you comfortable with pets?

Yes! I enjoy all pets and am not allergic to any pets. I do not however offer pet care.

How long should I have postpartum support?

This will look differently for all clients. I encourage viewing your postpartum period through the same lens as you would any significant life change. Assess your support structures within your family and external village, then plug in support where the gaps are. We have so much creative design in being able to make a gentle transition into parenthood! I usually also suggest a tapering down of support, especially for overnight clients so the adjustment to the end of support feels gradual and natural.

Do you prepare meals?

Yes! I LOVE to cook. My training is heavily rooted in Ayurveda and viewing food as support for the body. My greatest compliment to date has been having even toddlers enjoy postpartum meals too. For daytime clients that seek postpartum nutrition support, we review nutrition preferences during intake session prior to the beginning of support.
